Alpine skiing is one of the most sought- after winter sports, and Cortina can offer 51 ski lifts with 101 ski runs, covering a skiing area of 120 kilometers, suitable for all skiing levels. Medium level slopes cover two thirds of the whole area, 62%, while 33% is intended for beginners and 5% for expert skiers.
The most popular slopes in Cortina are on the Tofana mountain group. Starting from a location called Socrepes, you can easily reach the top of these famous mountains with the numerous available ski lifts. It is recommended to begin the skiing day at Socrepes, an easy area to get started, especially for beginners. After a couple of ski lift changes, passing through Rumerlo, you will reach the Pomedes hut, where you can enjoy an incredible view of the Tofana mountains. From there, there are 3 slopes to choose on the way down, at the foot of Cinque Torri; the Caprioli, an easy-intermediate piste, the Schuss (a famous World Cup ski run) and the Canalone. Schuss and Canalone are both steep, therefore suitable for advanced skiers only.
Other well known runs are the Tofanina, the Col Drusciè A and the Col Drusciè B. To get to the A and B slopes, you must go back to Rumerlo and take the ski lift to Col Drusciè. For a thrilling experience, try the Piste A, but only if you are an expert!
Another skiing area not to be missed is on the Faloria and Cristallo mountain groups, offering long and perfectly groomed runs, surrouned by beautiful scenery. Modern ski lifts covering all skiing levels offer great fun both for skiers and snowboarders, while families with children can enjoy a more relaxed time in the area. Most huts are open during the winter season, offering excellent local cuisine to be enjoyed during your ski break or for a pleasant dinner.
Cross country skiing facilities cover 70 kilometers of runs, for both advanced skiers and beginners. Some runs are located inside the Natural Park of Dolomiti d’Ampezzo, an area which offers stunning natural surroundings. The most famous facility is the Sports Center “Antonella De Rigo”, located in Fiames, a small Cortina neighbourhood, where you can ski on 7 kilometers of cross country rings, two of which are lit at night, and on 2 runs with facilities to make your journey on skis an enjoyable one.
Being Cortina d’Ampezzo one of the most popular ski resorts, more snow activities such as Alpine skiing and Snowshoeing excursions on ‘Ciaspe” -the local name for Snowshoes- are available, while admiring the wonderful Dolomites surroundings.
If during your stroll in the center of Cortina you consider going ice skating, you simply have to walk towards the end of Corso Italia, the pedestrian area, and take Via del Castello. After 500 meters you will find the Olympic Ice Skating rink, a famous touristic facility built in 1956 for the VII Winter Olympics. It features a large skating rink (measuring 30 x 60 meters) which also hosts figure skating competitions, hockey tournaments with local teams, as well as music shows playing throughout the whole winter.
